Network marketing, also known as multi-level marketing or MLM, is a multi-billion-dollar industry.
Surveys show that about 90% of people who get involved are doing so to get their share of that payout. In reality, though, only 26% of network marketers actually make money.
It’s not the industry that’s at fault. The problem is that many new marketers lack sales and networking skills when they start out. You can’t recruit for an MLM business without those abilities. Fortunately, you can learn them.
Network Marketing Recruitment – Skills for Success
Before you figure out how to recruit in network marketing, you have to consider the state of your communication skills. To succeed in a field that requires you to get others on board, you have to be highly persuasive and sociable. If you put in the effort, it’s possible to do.
Expand your social circle
The more people you know, the more potential MLM recruits you have. Even before you get your business off the ground, start building up your network. Go to meetup events; sign up for a team, or join a club. Anything you can do to build relationships will help you build your company.
Be approachable, trustworthy, and outgoing. Friend people on social media, then start commenting on and liking their posts.
If you’ve already got your network marketing business running, don’t start pushing it right away. Build relationships and attract people to you so that when you do start recruiting, people will respond.
Become a storyteller
People identify with a story because stories are about people. Listeners can picture a story’s characters in their minds and identify with them. That’s great news for you as a network marketer. Take your most successful moments and learn to present them as narratives. Give your stories detail and focus on how your life has changed since you started network marketing. Some great moments to talk about are:
- A big purchase or dream vacation you funded with your earnings
- A major change in your financial picture
- The moment you realized you’d achieved financial security
Make sure your audience can imagine themselves in your position. Be ready with at least one of these stories at all times. You never know when you’re going to encounter potential MLM recruits!
Spreading the Word
Besides being a star communicator, you’ll also need to have a solid grasp of basic outreach and publicity skills. These, too, are abilities you can develop and refine.
Make contact at least once a day. Twice is better.
As lucrative as your company may be, you still need to tell people about it and get them excited if you want to build your team.
Set a goal for yourself. At least once a day—preferably more than once—connect with a prospect or recruit. To make meaningful connections, you can:
- Like and share your recruits’ success posts
- Talk about opportunities in your business with an acquaintance
- Update your blog and send out an email about it
- Publicize an informational session
The possibilities are endless, but one thing is certain—the more you put yourself out there, the more chances you have to hear “yes.”
Give the people what they want
“Know your audience” is a basic principle of marketing, and it’s just as valid in the world of MLM recruiting. If you want people to join your network, you have to know what motivates them. You won’t learn that by assuming that you already know the answer.
Develop the skill of active listening. Focus completely on your conversations. It’s particularly important to listen to how people talk about their professional goals and career tracks. Verbally reflect back what you heard during the conversation so you know you’ve got it right.
Then, use what you know. In every piece of marketing content you create and at every face-to-face meeting, show people how they can achieve their personal dreams through network marketing.
Maintain the momentum
When you tell someone about your business, don’t let them leave empty handed after the talking’s done. Keep the excitement going by sending them away with an action item.
An action item can be something tangible like an informative DVD or brochure. Or, it can be a digital tool such as an emailed URL or an SMS invitation to a live event.
Good action items should do two things:
- Give people something they can do or read to learn more, and
- Show them that they can be part of a community.
People naturally want to be part of something larger than themselves, and that’s what network marketing is all about.
As you learn how to recruit in MLM, you’ll come to realize that you are your own best asset. Show you’re enthusiastic about sharing your business opportunity and let that energy shine through.
Be informative and be genuine—but most of all, be excited!
